Term 2 2019
In Week 5 our students will launch themselves into ‘Readers’ Cup’. This activity combines many reading, speaking and listening skills, including identifying literal and inferential comprehension, character and plot studies and communicating thoughts and opinions with their peers. This also forms a large component of our Homework for the term, with related spelling and writing activities. As this is a team activity, there is also an opportunity for us to continue our skills in organisation, persistence and getting along with others.
- Four ‘Reading Teams’ with five or six students in each team.
- A new book every week.
- A quiz every Friday / 11 questions, similar to the Spelling Test.
- 2 points for ten of the questions, 5 points for the main idea, giving a possible total score each week of 25 points, i.e. A total possible score of 100 points over the four weeks.
- Total team points are divided by the number of people on your team to get an average score for each team each week.
- This activity involves home reading and class reading.
- You need the book at school every day.
- 5 points deducted from your team’s score every time you don’t have the book at school.
- 10 points deducted from your team’s score if you don’t bring the book back on a Friday.
- During your Reading Team times, take turns of reading the story aloud and try to predict what the questions might be for each chapter.
- There will be a homework activity to go with every book.
- Team trophy plus an individual trophy (or trophies) presented after completion of the competition at the end of week 9.
Homework
Due end of Week 6: Develop a Story Map
Due end of Week 7: Write a Biography of an author
Due end of Week 8: Make a Character Cube
Due end of Week 9: Complete a Book Review
Week 9/10: During Week 9, select one other book by any one of these four authors and prepare a Keynote presentation (maximum 6 slides) about the book. This is a combination of your past 4 weeks of homework;
- a page about the plot, like your story map
- a page about the author, like your biography
- a page about the characters, like your character cube
- a page which states what you thought about it, what you liked or disliked about it, who you would recommend it to, how many stars you would give it, like your Book Review
- Due to be completed by Wednesday 26th June.
- Present this to the class.
As always, you will get some class time but you will have to definitely work on this at home as well.
Don’t forget to proofread and edit your work.
English, Term 1 2019
Our English Programme in the first half of this term is built around the “Extreme Adventures” series of novels written by Justin D’Ath. These novels provide the basis for a wide range of reading and writing tasks, including the creation of ‘extreme holiday’ brochures and written narratives.
